Grace Doll by Jennifer Laurens

Grace Doll had everything a girl could want: Fame. Fortune. Beauty.

Everything except, of course, her freedom. So when a powerful movie producer forces an experimental treatment on Grace--one that's purported to make beauty immortal--she stages her own death to escape him.

With the help of trusted friends, Grace slips into hiding. She's forever flawless, forever young and forever pursued by her past.

But when a stranger arrives on her doorstep, holding the key to a life she thought she'd left behind, Grace must decide between the safety she's known... and embracing the role she was born to play.

About the Author:

I write YA books. Whatever my heart desires, I write. I don't have someone over my shoulder, in some office somewhere telling me what I can and cannot write. Or should and shouldn't write. I listen to my heart, the center of my muse, and trust my instincts.

I've written since junior high school. An only child, I grew up writing big stories about big families. I also write YA under the name of JM Warwick. My hometown of Palos Verdes, California figures in much of my work, as does my current home of Pleasant Grove, Utah and other favorite places. I love to travel.

They say "write what you know" and I do. I am a mother, I have six children, five cats and a huge doberman/dane dog. I have a supportive husband and we've been married 25 years. Our lives, though challenging with a handicapped child who has autism, are centered in our family.

My life experiences have worked into all of my novels. Some more heavily than others, but parts of me are in each story. I love stories rich in family drama, where family members overcome obstacles through love and miracles.

Review:

I really enjoyed Grace Doll by Jennifer Laurens.  It was an easy to read story and had interesting characters.

Grace Doll was spotted at the age of 13 by Rufus Solomon a movie producer.  He said she was a woman in a child’s body.  He talked her parents into letting him take her and she never saw her parents again. They died 2 months later in a house fire.  He later married Grace.

Grace had everything, she was beautiful, had fame, and money; but Rufus was very controlling and Grace was afraid of him most of the time.  The only people that Grace could talk to were her makeup artist Jonathan and Oscar her personal assistant.  They knew that she was not in a good relationship and vowed to get her out of it.  One night Rufus hired a scientist to come over and inject her and himself with an experimental treatment that would keep her young forever. That very same night the house she lived in started on fire.  Jonathan and Oscar had come to her rescue – they helped her escape and found a place for her to go into hiding.  Everyone thought that she had died in the fire. That was everyone but Rufus – who still searched for her.

You will need to read this book to find out if Rufus ever finds Grace? What happened to Jonathan and Oscar? Did the treatment work?  I am sure you will enjoy this story as much as I did.

Healing Notes

Thank you for stopping at my spot on Healing Notes Book Tour. This Online Book Tour is brought to you by Goddess Fish Promotions. I will provide you with a synopsis of the book, review, excerpt and a small bio from Maggie Jaimeson. Visit the other blogs on this Book Tour to learn more about this book.

 About the book:

Forgiving yourself is the first step, but helping others forgive may be just too hard.

Rachel Cullen grew up in Scotland with a fiddle in her hand from the age of four. She couldn't imagine life as anything but a musician. When her husband brought her to America she was immediately embraced by the Celtic and Bluegrass communities. But after her divorce, Rachel's life is a mess.

A year of trying to prove to herself that she's woman enough for any man, and then a vicious rape while on tour with the band, leaves Rachel reeling. When she meets Noel Kershaw, an English teacher who is poetry in motion, she is definitely attracted. But he has a young child and he's suffering from his own divorce. The last thing Rachel needs in life is more baggage.

First, Rachel must reconcile who she is, what she wants, and how to get there. Maybe then she'll know how to be a part of the family she's always wanted.

Excerpt:

Claire crawled onto a stool on the other side of the island and smiled.  Neither of them talked for several minutes as they listened to the water in the pot heat.

“When I grow up, I’m going to play with Sweetwater Canyon all the time.”

“Are you sure you want to hang out with all us old folks?”

“You’re not all old. Well maybe a little old. But Kat isn’t old.”

Rachel smiled. “That’s true. She’s only seventeen.” And going on twenty-five it seemed sometimes.

“Oh, seventeen? That is old.” Claire put a finger to her lips and furrowed her brow. “How old do I have to be to play in the band all the time?”

“Probably at least eighteen.”

“But, you just said Kat—”

“Kat is different, because her mother plays in the band and can watch her all the time.”

“Well, you can watch me all the time. You can be my mother.”

Rachel gulped.

“Well, can’t you?”

“Can’t she what?” Noel walked in the room and lifted Claire off the chair in a big hug, swinging her around the room. “Can’t she what? She can do anything she wants.”

“See,” Claire leaned forward and looked at Rachel over Noel’s shoulder. “See, even Daddy thinks you can be my mother.”

“Whoa.” Noel set Claire back on the stool. “I’m not sure what I walked in on here.” He sent an accusing glance to Rachel. “You already have a mother, Claire.”

“I know. Not my real mother. My second mother. You know, like my friend, Megan. Her mommy and daddy got divorced and her daddy married a new mommy. So, Megan has two mommies now.  See?  Rachel can be my second mommy. Okay?”

Review:

What a wonderful story.  Once I started reading I didn't want it to end. I really liked how the people were discribed.

Rachel had gone through so much and was trying to cope with her friend getting married and then two months later announcing she was going to have a baby.  When she will probably never have one after the horrible rape she suffered.  She is wondering if she will ever met anyone and fall in love again.  Then she mets Noel and she is attrachted to him.  She wants more in her life.

I really liked this book and will have to read the rest in the Sweetwater Canyon Series, I can't wait to see what happens next. The first one Undertones: Michele's Story is available now, and the next two will be available in 2013 so watch for them.   I am sure if you like romance stories you will love this book too!
